1967 Blizzard

I remember the Great Chicago Blizzard of 1967.  Roosevelt School was closed for the first time in decades.  The boys got out first, because they needed to shovel out the school busses.  Then we all trudged home through the increasing inches of snow.  It was probably a lot harder for the teachers to got home than for us kids.

Cars got stuck in the snow right in the middle of the streets, and it was several days before they got them out.  I remember that Indiana Avenue looked like a parking lot where the cars were covered with a foot of snow.  We had overnight guests at home because the police were looking for places for those stranded motorists to go, and my dad jumped in and said we could take a couple.

After we were let out, some of us tried to help the teachers clean off their vehicles and push them towards the exit, many to no avail. Kim Wieloch and I made it to 144th Street and stopped at his Dad's law office. He sent us next door to the Diner(can't think of the name) for something to eat. In the days following, I made a few bucks $hoveling peoples homes. This past winter really brought back those memories.

My Mom had me stay home from school the day of the blizzard.  I remember being outside shoveling all day.  I think the blizzard this winter was worse.  I also experienced a blizzard in Pennsylvania that dumped 37 inches overnight.
